Who can go?

Faculty of Arts (Vancouver) and Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies (Okanagan) students especially those with an interest in German language, literature and culture are encouraged to apply.

Academic planning

Term dates

  • UBC Term 1 (Bauhaus Winter semester): October - March
    • intensive German language course available in September
  • UBC Term 2 (Bauhaus Summer semester):  April - July
    • intensive German language course available in March

*Students who attend in Term 1 will not be able to return to UBC for Term 2.

Course availability and restrictions

  • UBC students will mainly take courses in the Bauhaus Faculty of Media
  • There will be more courses available in English at the Master's Level which senior UBC students may take
  • Exchange students applying for Fine Arts, Visual Communication and Media Art and Design have to send portfolios together with the application to the International Office.
  • Most universities in Germany provide a “Schein," which you will receive for each course completed - please ensure that you keep it for your records and provide a copy to Go Global upon return from exchange

Course equivalency Formula

  • 2 ECTS = 1 UBC credit

Course load Information

It's recommended to take 30 ECTS per semester while on exchange.

Transfer credit

The transfer credit process takes approximately 16 weeks following each submission deadline. You should allow sufficient time to meet important deadlines that may affect you (e.g. application for graduation, registration in courses that require prerequisites that you took on exchange, entry to a major/honours program, etc.)

  • Students may take specific English courses identified by the program coordinator
  • B1 Level of German minimum is recommended for all students and is required for students to study in German: Please refer to the European language self-assessment guide

While you’re learning abroad, you remain a UBC student and are eligible for UBC awards, scholarships, and financial assistance.
