Who can go?

  • Exchange students can take coursework in most areas of study

Information for Law students:

Law students have the option of doing either the SELF, DEUF programs or one semester of the International LLM program. The International and European Business Law is the recommended option for Law students. The full LLM program is not available to UBC Law students.

When applying to Go Global:

  • Commerce students:  Select 'Lyon III-COMM'
  • Law students: Select 'Lyon III-LAW'
  • All other students: Select 'Lyon III-Uniwide

Academic planning

Term dates

  • UBC Term 1 (Lyon 3 Fall semester): Early September to Mid January (regular/DEUF program) OR to Mid December (SELF program)
  • UBC Term 2 (Lyon 2 Spring semester): Mid January to End May (regular/DEUF program) OR to End April (SELF program)

*SELF program ends in late December allowing term 1 students to return to UBC for term 2
*DEUF Program has Term 1 exams that end in mid-January

Course availability and restrictions

  • Please research applicable course restrictions on the Lyon III exchange website
  • SELF Program - Compulsory courses (up to and including B1 level of French):
    • French as foreign languages: 50 hours 5 credits
    • Introduction to French Culture and Civilization: 20 hours 2 credits
    • Optional courses: 4 courses to be chosen from around 20 courses in business and arts
  • DEUF Program - Compulsory courses (minimum B1 level and above):
    • French as a foreign language : 20 hours per semester: 5 credits per semester
    • Introduction to French Culture and Civilization: 10 hours per semester: 3 credits per semester
    • Choice of courses in all faculties: 36 credits including 21 credits in French language

  • ECTS credits divided by 2 = UBC credits

Transfer credit

The transfer credit process takes approximately 16 weeks following each submission deadline. You should allow sufficient time to meet important deadlines that may affect you (e.g. application for graduation, registration in courses that require prerequisites that you took on exchange, entry to a major/honours program, etc.)

Additional note for language of instruction

  • Limited course selection in English along with French language instruction through SELF program
  • Students must have at least an B1 level in French for the DEUF program (To determine your level, please self-assess with: European Language Portfolio Global Scale)
    • SELF program is appropriate for French beginners and intermediate (up to and including B1 level)
    • DEUF program is appropriate for students with intermediate to advanced French (minimum B1)
  • The LLM program for Law students is in English

While you’re learning abroad, you remain a UBC student and are eligible for UBC awards, scholarships, and financial assistance.
