Course availability and restrictions
- 100-level are appropriate for those who have not studied the subject at university level and also for students with only limited background in the field
- 200 and 300-level courses at Lancaster will almost always be equivalent to upper division courses at a North American university
- There is no pre-registration for courses at Lancaster and courses cannot be guaranteed in advance (please see the timetable and note that some seminars and tutorials are not included)
- Most formal teaching takes place during the Michaelmas (October-December) and Lent (January-March) terms, but 100-level courses continue until halfway through the Summer (April-June) term
- Some 200-level science and math courses are taught in the Summer term
- As is usual in British universities, many Lancaster courses are taught continuously across two or three terms, designated full year (FY) in the course listings - however, many courses can be taken for Michaelmas or Lent/Summer only and therefore cover only part of the course material, for proportionally fewer credits
- There is little formal teaching in the Summer term as you will be completing your assignments and preparing for your exams - examinations are mainly held in May and June
Course equivalency Formula
- 1 Lancaster Credit = 1 UBC credit OR
- ECTS credits divided by 2 = UBC credits
- Lancaster also uses the European Credit Transfer System
Course load Information
- Full year 120 UK – CATS, 60 ECTS
- Michaelmas 48 UK – CATS, 24 ECTS
- Lent/Summer 60 UK – CATS, 32 ECTS
Transfer credit
The transfer credit process takes approximately 16 weeks following each submission deadline. You should allow sufficient time to meet important deadlines that may affect you (e.g. application for graduation, registration in courses that require prerequisites that you took on exchange, entry to a major/honours program, etc.)

Other opportunities at this partner
British Universities Transnational Exchange Association (BUTEX)
Each year BUTEX awards a number of £500 scholarships to students studying abroad for a single semester or full academic year. The University of Lancaster is a BUTEX member so incoming study abroad students applying to Leeds can submit a scholarship application.
BUTEX scholarships are awarded based on a calendar year and not an academic year. This means that students who are completing a full year of exchange that takes place across two calendar years will have two opportunities to apply, but each student can only win a BUTEX scholarship once.
